Defenseman Ryan Murphy, selected in the first round by the Carolina Hurricanes, is among 26 players selected by to play for Team Canada in the Canada – Russia Challenge. The event runs from August 9th – 14th with two games being played in Yaroslavl, Russia and two games playing in Halifax, Nova Scotia.

Murphy was selected as the 12th overall player in the 2011 NHL entry draft and spent last season with the Kitchener Rangers in the Ontario Hockey League. Murphy had an up-and-down season with the Rangers, he suffered a concussion due to a dirty hit by Tom Kuhnhackl (who was suspended 20 games), and later was cut from Team Canada in the World Junior tournament.
Despite these minor hiccups, Murphy finished the 2011 – 2012 season with 54 points in 49 games, bringing his career totals to 172 points in 174 regular season games. He was voted as the Rangers best offensive defenseman, for the second year in a row, was tied for third for points by a defenseman (despite missing a handful of games), and was voted as the second best stickhandler and the best skater & best offensive defenseman in the 2012 Western Conference Coaches Poll.
